    SUBJ: RETIREMENT - C60 209 821 PO1 MT HALES - 00342 CL DVR 1. PO1 MICHAEL HALES SENDS FIVE BELLS TO SIGNAL HIS FELLOW DIVERS THAT HE HAS COMPLETED HIS WORK AND WILL BE HANGING UP HIS FINS AND PUTTING AWAY HIS CRIMPERS FOR THE LAST TIME. 2. PO1 MICHAEL HALES JOINED THE CAF AS A WEAPONS TECH IN 1994 BUT AFTER A COUPLE YEARS FIGURED DIVING WAS WHERE THE EXCITEMENT WAS, SO IN 1996 COMPLETED THE SHIPS TEAM DIVING COURSE. AN OVERACHIEVER, HE SET HIS SIGHTS ON THE CLEARANCE DIVING TRADE AND IN 1999 CHALLENGED THE CD PRELIM. GRADUATING HIS QL5 IN 2000 HE WOULD SPEND THE NEXT 17 YEARS SERVING HONOURABLY AT FDU (P) AND CFB GAGETOWN. HE HAS DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF AND THE CAF DURING OPERATIONS SUCH AS OP PODIUM AND MANY DOMESTIC EOD AND DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS THROUGHOUT HIS 22 YEARS OF SERVICE. 3. CONSTABLE HALES HAS SET OUT ON A SECOND CAREER PATH AND JOINED THE SAANICH POLICE DEPARTMENT. PLEASE JOIN MIKE, JUDITH AND THEIR CHILDREN GABRIELLE AND TIMOTHY IN CELEBRATING AN OUTSTANDING CAREER ON 28 JULY IN THE FDU(P) MESS STARTING AT 1200.     SUBJ: RETIREMENT CPO2 ANDREW GILMOUR

    1. CPO2 ANDREW GILMOUR WILL BE SENDING FIVE BELLS TO SIGNAL HIS FELLOW DIVERS THAT HE HAS COMPLETED HIS WORK AND WILL BE HANGING UP HIS FINS AND PUTTING AWAY HIS CRIMPERS FOR THE LAST TIME. 2. CPO2 ANDREW (ANDY) GILMOUR JOINED THE CAF AS A RESERVE INFANTRYMAN IN 1979 AND AFTER A FEW YEARS FIGURED THE REGULAR FORCE WAS WHERE THE EXCITEMENT WAS, SO IN 1982 HE SIGNED UP AGAIN BUT THIS TIME AS A COMBAT ENGINEER. HAILING FROM THE GREAT CITY OF MONTREAL THE CA THOUGHT IT WOULD BE ONLY FITTING TO POST HIM TO 5 RGC IN VALCARTIER (HE DID NOT SPEAK ANY FRENCH!). AFTER TRADES TRAINING AND HONING HIS WARFIGHTING SKILLS, SAPPER GILMOUR CHALLENGED THE COMBAT DIVERS COURSE IN 1983 HELD AT FDU(P) WITH PO2 CONSTANTINE AND LS THIELE AS HIS INSTRUCTORS. FROM THERE HE HAD THE SKILLS REQUIRED OF A SAPPER TO GO FORWARD AND DO GOOD THINGS AND THE CA DECIDED TO POST HIM TO LAHR GERMANY IN 1985 TO HELP FIGHT AGAINST COMMUNIST AGGRESSION (MOST OF US WERE STILL IN HIGH SCHOOL). BY THE TIME HE HIT THE GROUND MOST OF THE FIGHT WAS OVER SO HE SETTLED FOR A RELAXING FIVE YEAR WINE AND CHEESE TOUR OF THE EUROPEAN COUNTRYSIDE. 3. IN JUN 1989 HE WAS POSTED BACK TO CANADA WITH 1 CER OUT OF CHILLIWACK, THIS WAS THE TURNING POINT FOR YOUNG ANDY AND HE MADE THE DECISION TO FURTHER CHALLENGE HIMSELF AND HIS DIVING SKILLS WITH AN OCCUPATIONAL TRANSFER TO CLEARANCE DIVER. APRIL 1990 HE PASSED THE CLEARANCE DIVER PRELIM COURSE AND STARTED HIS QL5A COURSE IN SEP OF THAT SAME YEAR. DURING HIS FIRST FEW YEARS AT FDU(P) HE VOLUNTEERED FOR QUOTE CANADA REMEMBERS END QUOTE THE MARCHING CONTINGENT WHICH TOURED EUROPE COMMEMORATING THE 50TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE INVASION OF EUROPE. THIS IS WHERE HE MET HIS FUTURE WIFE AND MOTHER OF HIS SON NANCY WHO WAS ALSO IN THE MARCHING CONTINGENT. AS A CLEARANCE DIVER CPO2 GILMOUR HAS SERVED HONOURABLY AT FDU(P), CFB BORDEN AND DRDC/DCIEM TORONTO. HE HAS DISTINGUISHED HIMSELF AND THE CAF DURING OPERATIONS SUCH AS OP PERSISTANCE (SWISS AIR 111), OP APOLLO AND MANY DOMESTIC EOD AND DISASTER RELIEF EFFORTS THROUGHOUT HIS 38 YEARS OF SERVICE. 4. MR GILMOUR WILL BE MOVING ON TO A TWO DAY PER WEEK POSITION AT FDU(P) AS AN EQUIPMENT TECHNICIAN AND ENJOYING FIVE DAY WEEKENDS AT HOME TINKERING IN HIS GARAGE. PLEASE JOIN ANDY, NANCY AND THEIR SON CONNOR IN CELEBRATING AN OUTSTANDING CAREER ON 18 AUG IN THE FDU(P) MESS STARTING AT 1200.
